Special Projects

Governor’s
Island Harbor School

This unique project is located in the historical, 172-acre National Monument known as Governors Island and is the first project of a comprehensive plan for the redevelopment use of the island since the U.S. Army and Coast Guard regional administrative centers left in 1996.

This project involves the adaptive reuse for an existing hospital building. The project consisted of a total gut rehabilitation of the existing hospital building and conversion to a new, state of the art, specialized program High School. The new High School serves as the platform for the relocation of maritime programs for the existing New York Harbor School, located in Brooklyn, New York. DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc.’s responsibilities included the complete design of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems including new incoming utilities for domestic water, storm discharge, sewer service, gas, electric power, telecommunications and satellite television/cable television service. Special sensitivity to the local surroundings required that serious considerations to wildlife and the local environment was implemented in the design of all systems including lighting, energy and water use and air quality.

Roosevelt Island – Octagon Park

DVL provided design engineering services for modifications to Octagon Park on Roosevelt Island.  These modifications include site lighting and site plumbing and drainage associated with drinking fountains, new sports steel spray fixtures (misting stations) and ground hydrants.  DVL also provided engineering design for modifications to the existing comfort station which included not only upgrades to plumbing systems but also electrical design for telephone, internet, security and card reader system infrastructure.

Jersey City Pump Station/Colgate Clock

To address the changing weather patterns that have been seen in recent years, DVL is provided design services to create a new pump station in Jersey City to ensure appropriate and efficient drainage during storm events.  This pump station was designed to account for pressures noted in this densely populated and beautifully developed area of Jersey City, which also contained New Jersey tallest structure.  In an effort to maintain the aesthetic appeal of this area, a park was also designed to disguise equipment complete with the presence of the Colgate Clock.  DVL was also the electrical engineer for the restoration of the historic clock which faced the New York City Skyline for 90 years.

NYC Department of Parks and Recreation

DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. is currently providing design engineering services for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for various sites throughout New York City.  Below are three examples of projects DVL completed design for:
Ogden Plimpton Playground, Bronx, NY DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. provided design engineering services to assist in upgrading this community playground.

DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. provided design engineering services to assist in upgrading this community playground.  The playground had become disheveled and unsafe, and with feedback from the local residents, a plan was created to develop this park space into a more active, valuable resource for community members.  Specific modifications and ugprades included designing plumbing fixtures and coordinating services to improve drinking fountains and provide improved water features/spray park.  Site lighting had also become a security concern, and this was upgraded and improved as well.

DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. is in the process of providing design engineering services for the Mt. Hope Garden in the Bronx.  As this park area is being renovated for the Department of Parks and Recreation, DVL was requested to incorporate new incoming water service into the plans and an underground RPZ vault and utilities for new recreational splash fountains.  DVL also provided for new security cameras in an effort to deter future crime or vandalism in the new park space.  The new security technology implemented in this project utilized a solar powered security camera which eliminated the need for new incoming electrical utilities.  It also allowed for ease of access by Parks/Security Personnel in that this technology could be accessed utilizing wireless download from integral camera memory.

DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc.’s services were requested for the remediation of the ballfields at the Red Hook Recreation Complex.  The 4.17 acres of ballfields were the focus of the efforts to improve the space and increase the resiliency to flooding.  As such, new turf ballfields were proposed and surrounding surface/subsurface drainage would be designed to better account for storm water retention.  DVL will also be responsible for drinking fountains, RPZ, misting stations and security lighting for the site.

Building Conversion Projects

Stella Maris School

The Stella Maris School involved the conversion of a catholic school to a public primary school.  DVL provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for this multi-phase project.  This project will be completed in two phases to provide partial usage of the building and serve the needs of the community, as the entire building is renovated.  This requires specific attention be given to MEP systems designed to modify the existing spaces but create a basis for the creation of a larger interconnected system as the two portions of the school become one.  Design is currently underway for the second phase of this project and requires upsizing and upgrading incoming services and reconnecting systems between the two portions of the building.

Saint Mary Gate of Haven

The Saint Mary Gate of Heaven project involved the conversion of two buildings at this former Catholic school to a public primary school.   DVL provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design for this project which was to be modified in two phases.  The first phase involved design for an annex building that existed on the school grounds.  This annex was renovated as a standalone building, which made phasing the design of the entire school and subsequent construction and occupation of that portion of the school more readily achieved.  Once the annex portion of the building was occupied for over two years, design began and is in progress for the remainder of the school.

Technical Construction Services Support

West Point

DVL is currently performing QAQC for the General Contractor of four projects at West Point while providing MEP and FP technical support for shop drawing review and  meetings with US Army Corp of Engineers.

26 Broadway

The 26 Broadway project consists of three different schools designed to occupy several leased spaces within a 32 story high rise office building located in the area near Wall Street in New York City. The first school designed was the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women, which occupies three floors of the building. The space was modified with new mechanical systems to provide for general heating, ventilation and air conditioning requirements and accommodate new facilities such as science laboratories and locker rooms. New energy efficient lighting fixtures were provided for the school as well as a variety of electrical systems, including a local access network, intercommunication and television distribution systems, video surveillance and fire alarm systems. Plumbing systems were modified or extended and new systems were also designed to accommodate the new student population. In a similar fashion two other schools were created within this existing facility, including one which was renovated from a museum.

    Brooklyn Family Courts

Full gut rehabilitation of a six story high rise building formerly occupied by the New York State Court System. DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. was the Design Engineer for HVAC, electrical, fire protection and plumbing systems for a $65,000,000 project. The HVAC system for this facility needed to be specialized to accommodate the very low slab to slab distances. The innovative HVAC design employed central rooftop HVAC units, and dual temperature, floor mounted, fan coil units within each space. Chilled water to fan coil units was obtained from a roofmounted, modular, air cooled chiller. This very special adaptation to the existing structure required that a new floor be added to house a new gymnasium with an interstitial space between the existing roof and the floor of the new gymnasium floor. The interstitial space accommodated mechanical equipment for the project. Intensive coordination and acoustical calculations were performed to ensure the HVAC system met the noise criteria in each space. All new incoming utilities and services were provided for this project.
