Community Redevelopment

PS 281M

PS/IS 281M is the new school that has been incorporated into the East River Residential Development.  This school, accommodating 612 local students will service children from Pre-K through 8th grade and have dedicated spaces for children with special needs.  Accommodations were made to best utilize the exciting, newly developed space surrounding the school, while still maintaining a focus on the most effective learning environment for the students.  The construction of this school also presented with many challenges that had to be overcome to incorporate this school structure into the existing community such as modifications to mechanical plans to account for noise of equipment.  DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design services for the building and played a critical role in making the changes and modification necessary to make this challenging project a success.

PS 342M

DVL is currently providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services for a new public school to be nestled within this new development on the West Side of Manhattan.  The plan for this underutilized portion of the city is to create mixed use structures including both residential and commercial spaces and a new school building for the local children.  The new school will be an 85,000 sq.ft. facility built within a 43 story building following the program and design requirements approved by the New York City School Construction Authority.

PS 464M

DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. was the Engineer of Record for the PS 464M project.  The PS 464M school was constructed to occupy the lowest nine floors of a 40 story high rise building in Manhattan.  Given the mixed usage of the building, constant, focused coordination was necessary with the Developer’s team to ensure that utilities provided for at the onset of construction are appropriate for both the residential, retail spaces and the school.

One such example of this coordination effort involved many utilities that were required to be installed on the 40th floor of the building in a mechanical penthouse.  Those utilities were then fed down through the residential spaces to the school and retail portions, including the chiller for the school which required coordination of chiller refrigerant lines and electrical feeds and controls to be routed down the 40 floors. The school was also provided with a rooftop playground on the 9th floor.  The school was designed to be a separate entity with a dedicated entrance and individual systems and the local subway station was modified to provide an entrance directly through the building.

Hunters Point North

The Hunters Point North Development-PS/IS 312Q project involved a full scale development including a proposed 40 story residential tower, parking facility and new park and playing field overlooking the East River in Queens, NY.  The school includes a gymnasium, 300 seat auditorium, cafeteria, science, art and music rooms and will be home to students grade K through 8.  DVL Consulting Engineers, Inc. provided design services for all MEP systems for the school and coordination with residential developer to ensure the two mechanical systems and incoming utilities worked in harmony, given the contiguous nature of the main two structures.
