Electrical

Electrical engineers are responsible for the design, development, testing, and oversight of the production of electrical devices. This includes equipment like electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communication technologies, and power generation machinery. Additionally, electrical engineers create the electrical systems used in cars and airplanes.

Electrical Steps

Design of power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, security cameras, card access systems, voice, data, auxiliary systems.

Design of automatic lighting controls systems (i.e. day harvesting, vacancy and motion detection systems).

Coordination with electrical utility companies for new services or upgrades to existing electrical services to buildings.

Integration of photovoltaic systems to power distribution in buildings.

Electrical load shading analysis.

When doing work in campus settings or doing tenant design work, coordinate with owners for extension of electrical power and for compliance with base building or campus electrical design standards.

Design of emergency and stand-by power systems with the use of diesel, natural gas, propane and dual fuel generator systems.

Inspection and overall assessment of operating conditions of existing power distribution, fire alarm, security systems and all types of low voltage systems for property acquisitions and/or to create budgets for capital improvement projects.

Work with Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) in assessing conditions of existing lighting systems to determine savings in maintenance and  operation when implementing new lighting and associated automatic control systems, and utilizing those saving to offset cost to implement upgrades.

Provide assistance to Sustainable Design Consultants to determine best project specific power densities for lighting system to reduce energy consumption and maximize LEED Rating Goals.

Electrification of existing buildings that utilize fossil fuel to only electric operated systems.

Assist building developers and public agencies in conducting Value Engineering (VE) studies to reduce cost of construction of electrical systems.

Filing of fire alarm systems with regulating authorities.

Provide technical assistance to contractors and construction managers during electrical construction phase to verify codes compliance, compliance with design intent, overall quality assurance in construction of electrical systems, verify accuracy of RFI responses by Engineers of Records (EORs), assist in resolution of electrical conflicts and/or unforeseen filed conditions, assist on resolution of objections from building inspectors, provide assistance to electrical systems commissioning agents and for startup of electrical systems.

Code compliance analysis for fire alarm, emergency power and normal power systems including compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC) for layouts of electrical service rooms.

Write field reports and scope of work reports for existing electrical systems, and schematic reports for new electrical systems.

Production of electrical design in CAD and/or REVIT (BIM).

Writing of electrical specifications.
